GIFT Tournament

11th Annual Gray International Fly Tournament

In Loving Memory of world-class Sportsfisherman Harry Gray

Costa Rica means “Rich Coast”, a name given by the Spanish conquistadors seeking treasures in gold during the 16th century.  Today, anglers traveling to Costa Rica find a different type of treasure along the coastline of this peaceful and scenic country.  That treasure has fins, grows large, fights hard and is plentiful! Visiting anglers have reported raising 20 to 60 sailfish in a single day of trolling! Big fish, arm-wrenching action, double hookups, and more fish jumps in one week than most people see in a lifetime… these are just a few of the life-altering experiences that filter out of the small town of “Quepos” located on the pacific coast of Costa Rica.

Quepos, with its calm waters and light winds has developed into and is, without a doubt, one of the premier sport fishing destinations in the world for sailfish and marlin on a flyrod!  It offers seasoned veterans and novices alike, world-class billfishing on the fly, pleasant accommodations, excellent food and a friendly atmosphere.

Being such a world-class fishing destination, Quepos became home to our friend and world-class fly fisherman, Harry Gray for over 10 years.  He set many world records fishing in the waters of Costa Rica.  Harry became ill and was in need of a liver transplant but sadly was not in the condition needed to receive it and passed away on October 15, 2000.  In memory of Harry, we hold a fly-fishing tournament here in Quepos every year.  All proceeds go to the Transplant Center for Children in Costa Rica.  We have so far raised over $90,000 for the Center!

The fishing dates for the 11th Annual GIFT are the 24th through the 27th of January 2011.  This is an all-fly, release-tournament with a maximum of twenty-pound test tippet.   All IGFA Flyfishing rules apply.  Additional rules will be reviewed during the registration and dinner on Sunday the 23th in El Gran Escape Restaurant.

The entry fee is $600 USD per angler.  This covers the tournament “Kick-off” dinner on Sunday night at 6:00pm for you and your crew and the Awards dinner on Thursday evening.   All anglers and crew must attend the Kick-off dinner.

Reserve your spot (team) ASAP!  We have a great group of anglers who return every year to fish the Tournament, and of course, we welcome new anglers to join us in this great cause.
